Strathmore to host women’s football camp in January – StrathmoreNow.com
The South Calgary Female Colts tackle football team features both U16 and U19 teams and the group is looking for more girls to join in on the fun.
There are two teams in Calgary split north and south along with the east outlying areas including Strathmore, Chestermere, and Langdon.
“There’s not firm boundaries, but we’re just kind of trying to incorporate everybody and kind of get as furthest reach as possible,” mentioned Tatrina Medvescek, head coach of the organization.
The group has a Try It Camp on January 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Strathmore Sports Centre to try to attract new players to the team.
Medvescek says it can be hard for girls to come out by themselves and try something new, especially a physical sport like football.
“It’s a very good group and we want everybody to succeed, and we are there for them.”
The organization plays in the Southern Alberta Female Football League (SAFFL) with teams from Calgary, Okotoks, Airdrie, and Lethbridge playing tackle football with six players per side.
“Our players include all types of athletes. From those who’ve never played the game, to seasoned veterans with several years of experience. Our U19 teams have had several players selected to represent Team Alberta and compete at a national level,” says the group in a news release.
The female Colts were also the SAFFL champions in 2024 during their inaugural season.
“We had an amazing group of athletes out there and an amazing coaching staff. We’re very fortunate to be a part of it and just want to continue building on it,” added Medvescek.
Games are played from April to June of 2025 and practices will start in February and change over to outdoors when the weather gets warmer.
