Speaking during his keynote address at the Taj Lands End Leadership Summit in Mumbai, India, Popoola underscored the importance of embracing authenticity in leadership to drive sustainable development.
The summit, as contained in the NGX statement on Friday, themed Authenticity, Leadership, and Hope for the Future, provided a platform for the Nigerian business leader to share his insights on leadership in an increasingly interconnected world.
“Authentic leadership is about being true to oneself while fostering a sense of purpose and trust within teams. It’s about leading with empathy, integrity, and a genuine commitment to the collective good,” Popoola said during his address.
Drawing from his diverse life journey, spanning an upbringing in the United Kingdom and Nigeria, a strong academic background in chemical engineering and finance, and a career defined by leadership excellence across continents and sectors, Popoola highlighted how these experiences shaped his global perspective.
He emphasised the need for leaders to build cohesive teams capable of delivering exceptional outcomes by prioritising self-awareness and collaboration.
“Leadership goes beyond the boardroom; it’s about showing up authentically in every aspect of life. Balancing professional success with personal commitments is challenging, but it is essential for holistic growth,” he remarked, reflecting on the importance of maintaining authenticity in all spheres of life.
Popoola also shared practical insights on fostering a culture of innovation and inclusivity within organisations.
“Investing in talent and creating an environment where ideas can flourish are critical for long-term success. Leaders must not only inspire but also empower their teams to think creatively and take ownership of their roles,” he added.
The NGX boss credited spirituality and lifelong learning as foundational pillars that have provided strength and resilience during periods of uncertainty.
“The wisdom gained from mentors and books has been invaluable in shaping my approach to leadership and decision-making,” he noted.
Expressing optimism for the future, particularly in developing nations like India and Nigeria, Popoola described the youth as untapped reservoirs of innovation and growth.
“The energy and creativity of young people are transformative. Leaders must invest strategically in their development to unlock their full potential,” he urged.
He concluded his address with a call to action for leaders across industries and geographies. “To address the evolving challenges of our world, leaders must prioritize authenticity, champion continuous learning, and harness the power of human capital. These elements are vital for achieving sustainable development,” Popoola said.
