Glasgow music project bringing community together wins award

For the last 11 years, the project has worked with young people from babies and toddlers to senior school pupils and adults, delivering free drop-in sessions for little ones, a weekly community orchestra for grown-ups, holiday clubs and more, all built around the joy of playing music and singing.

With music tuition being cut in schools, Big Noise Govanhill helps fill the gap, which is ever more important as music can help people in a multitude of ways, improving development, social skills and mental health.

The Govanhill programme is run by Sistema Scotland, and it works with around 1100 members from its base at the area’s neighbourhood centre.

Nina Williams and Catherine Innes were over the moon to accept the Arts Champion accolade on behalf of everyone at Big Noise Govanhill at the Glasgow Community Champion Awards.

The event is organised by the Glasgow Times and supported by Glasgow City Council, Allied Vehicles Charitable Trust and St Enoch Centre.

The two women were accompanied on stage by some of the young musicians who take part in the programme.

“We are super-excited just to be here, to be surrounded by so many deserving people,” said Nina.
