Maldives Supports UN Resolution Seeking ICJ Opinion on Humanitarian Aid to Palestine
The Maldives has expressed its support for a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly, which calls for an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Israel’s responsibilities in facilitating humanitarian aid to Palestine.
The resolution, adopted on December 19, seeks clarification from the ICJ on Israel’s obligations in relation to the actions taken by the UN, international organizations, and other countries to provide humanitarian assistance to Palestine. The resolution was proposed by a group of countries, led by Norway, and co-sponsored by the Maldives.
With 137 member states, including the Maldives, voting in favor, the resolution marks a significant step towards enhancing international efforts to assist the Palestinian people. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives has emphasized the importance of this move, recognizing it as a vital contribution to maintaining global efforts to support Palestine.
Furthermore, the Ministry highlighted that the Maldives views its support for the resolution as part of its broader commitment to advancing the cause of a sovereign Palestinian state, based on the pre-1967 borders.
