A workshop emphasizes traditional dance of Kayin, Mon and Rakhine ethnics.

A workshop on the traditional music and dance of the Kayin, Mon, and Rakhine ethnic groups was held at the National University of Arts and Culture (Yangon) in the second week of December.
During the event, Kayin ethnic scholar Saw Myint Thu compared the colonial-era Maung Roh don dance with its modern counterpart, while scholar Saw Wunna Tun discussed the composition and vocal techniques of the Yaway Nyar song. Mon ethnic scholar Min Han Win Aung demonstrated the process of crafting and playing the Mon crocodile musical instrument, and scholar Mi Mya Than explained the ancient Mon duet dance and the Sama Kwet dance. Rakhine ethnic scholar Saw Khin Nu outlined the foundational elements of Rakhine traditional dances and elaborated on the four styles of dance across four historical eras.
Students from the university showcased traditional music and dances of the Kayin, Mon, and Rakhine ethnic groups, followed by an engaging a Q&A session and discussions with attendees.
The Rector of the university awarded certificates of appreciation and gifts to Rakhine ethnic musician and dance artistes, as well as gifts to participating students. Additionally, Mon traditional musician Min Han Win Aung and his wife, Mi Thi Thi Htwe, donated a Mon crocodile musical instrument to the university, for which the Rector presented a certificate of appreciation.
The workshop was attended by faculty members, departmental heads, Kayin, Mon, and Rakhine musicians and dancers, as well as teachers and students of the university. —ASH/TKO
