MIRI (Dec 26): With the right guidance and support, local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can grow globally, said Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) Miri Branch chairman, Mohammad Hafidz Rohani.

He called on local entrepreneurs not to feel that they are too small to go further, and to continue to strive to explore international markets to expand sales, thus bringing Sarawak’s name to the global stage.

“This is an important step, in line with the state government’s desire to put Sarawak’s name on the world stage,” he said.

He was speaking during the flagging-off ceremony of several shipment containers of Sarawak’s biscuits to Doha today.

The shipment, featuring five Stock Keeping Units (SKU), was set to depart from Port Klang on December 26, 2024, and will arrive in Doha, Qatar, on January 6, 2025.

The products will be distributed across key outlets in Qatar, including cafes, restaurants, and hospitals, solidifying Malaysia’s presence in the international market.

Also present from Federal Authority Marketing Agency (Fama) during the ceremony were its Senior Director for Market Promotion Division, Habibah Sulaiman; Director for Domestic Market Promotion Division, Siti Rafiza Nawawi; Senior Assistant Director for Overseas Market Promotion Division, Muhammad Nor Abdul Manan; and Assistant Economic Affairs Officer for Overseas Market Promotion Division, Mohd Syahmi Abdul Razak.

Hafidz, who is also the managing director of IANA Corporation Sdn Bhd, was confident that Malaysian products, with the quality offered, including those from Sarawak, can attract overseas buyers.

At the same time, he stressed the importance of strong support from the state and federal governments through various agencies.

Among them are Fama, the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (Mintred), Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), SME Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp), Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad (PUNB) and SME Bank Malaysia, which can help SMEs explore the export market.

Hafidz commented on the recent success of a local SME that recorded a major achievement when it successfully obtained an export order for biscuit products to Qatar through the guidance and initiative of Fama.

The success was a result of the SME’s participation in the Hospitality Qatar 2024 exhibition, which was a platform that showcases the excellence of Malaysia’s agri-food sector on the international stage.

He added that Fama remains committed to empowering more local entrepreneurs through consultation, mentoring, and export market opportunities.

Hafidz also encouraged entrepreneurs interested in starting their export journey to contact Fama for the necessary assistance and guidance.
