Moana 2 Domestic Box Office Nearing Major Milestone The Original Disney Movie Missed Internationally
Moana 2 is approaching a huge domestic milestone. The new Disney animated movie is the sequel to their 2016 smash hit and follows the title character (Auli’i Cravalho) reuniting with the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) for a brand-new adventure. The Moana 2 release began the day before U.S. Thanksgiving, but it has continued to thrive through the Christmas holiday weekend, maintaining the No. 1 position for three consecutive weeks and keeping a spot in the Top 5 through its fifth weekend so far.
Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, the Moana 2 box office is projected to reach a cumulative domestic total of $394.2 million by the end of the post-Christmas weekend. This sees the movie drawing ever closer to the $400 million domestic milestone, which only three movies (the record-breakers Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Wicked) have passed so far in 2024. The original movie was unable to pass this milestone in either market, as it earned $248.7 million in North America and $643.3 million internationally.
What This Means For Moana 2
The Movie Is An Undeniable Success
The Moana 2 box office has reached untold heights, surpassing $800 million worldwide at the time of writing and showing very few signs of slowing down. It is very likely to hit the $400 million domestic milestone before it hits its seventh weekend in domestic theaters, a point at which the original movie had only made $225.3 million in North America. This will make it one of the 50 highest-grossing domestic movies of all time.
The list of movies that have grossed more than $400 million in North America ranges from 2013’s Frozen ($400.9 million) to 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens ($936.7 million).
Given the lead that the sequel has maintained over the 2016 movie after debuting with $139.8 million compared to the original’s $56.6 million, it seems entirely possible that Moana 2 could reach a total domestic gross as high as $500 million by the end of its run. At the very least, it could pass the $450 million milestone, cementing the Moana movies as yet another successful Disney franchise after their Pixar brand pulled off a similar trick with their record-breaking sequel Inside Out 2 earlier in the year.
Our Take On The Moana 2 Milestone
Its Path Toward Further Success Is Clear
As the movie continues to climb up the chart, it faces some major competition from tentpole movies including Wicked, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Disney’s own Mufasa: The Lion King. However, as the holiday season draws to a close, its path toward continued success is clear. There are currently no major movies set to premiere in theaters until Wolf Man on January 17 and no new wide releases at all until January 10. This leaves at least two weekends entirely clear for Moana 2 to continue finding new and repeat viewers as the holiday season draws to a close.
