Under the bright lights of the Louisiana high school gridiron, Class 3A football season showcased a thrilling blend of talent, grit, and unforgettable moments.

Class 3A stood out with its high-octane offenses and staunch defenses, featuring programs that consistently punched above their respective weights. Senior standouts delivered clutch performances, while underclassmen announced their presence with breakout seasons. Whether district rivalries or postseason drama, the 2024 campaign offered something for every fan.

The season concluded a couple of weeks ago, and with the All-State teams being released to the general public, it’s time to break down the highlights from an unforgettable season.

Team of the Year: Sterlington

Sterlington was the lone program to win a state title from Class 3A, so it was a no-brainer. Despite starting the season 2-3, the Panthers won nine of its next 10 games, including its 35-28 victory over St. James in the Division III Non-Select State Championship. During that stretch, Sterlington scored over 40 points a game and defeated its opponents by an average score of 41-18.

As a team, the Panthers rushed for 4,376 yards and had four players rush for at least 500 yards. Two of those players rushed for over 1,000 yards: Gaven Evans and Hagen Herring.

Surprise Team of the Year: Haynes Academy

Out of all the teams that had flown through their ceilings, nobody flew higher than Haynes Academy. The Yellow Jackets finished the regular season undefeated for the first time in school history and won their first district title. Although they were upset in the second round by Istrouma, Haynes proved that its standards on the football field can be as high as its academic standards.

Coach(es) of the Year: Lee Doty (Sterlington) and Lavonta Davis (St. James)

Both coaches were on very similar paths this season due to two factors: they had to replace many starters from last season and led their respective teams to the state championship game.

Doty won his second state title at Sterlington and third overall state title as a head coach by leading the Panthers to the Division III Non-Select title in a 35-28 victory over St. James. He did this despite replacing many key pieces with new starters with a solid amount of sophomores and juniors.

Davis, the losing coach, deserves much credit for his team’s success, leading St. James to its second consecutive state title appearance. The Wildcats had to replace many key players from last season’s team, including a four-year starter in quarterback Brayden Williams and most of its offense. Many of the players who started were sophomores. Moreover, two of its offensive starters were freshmen, quarterback Ja’Juan Jackson and wide receiver Kamon Mitchell.

Player of the Year: Quarterback Dillan Compton, Bunkie

Dillan Compton has been the center point of Bunkie’s offense for the last three seasons. The senior quarterback threw for 2,287 yards and 28 touchdowns and rushed for 568 yards and 13 touchdowns. Most importantly, he led the Panthers to its first semifinal appearance in school history. Compton was named the Class 3A Offensive MVP by the LFCA and the LSWA.
