Jason Reitman Reveals Chevy Chase’s Unpleasant Reaction to His SNL Movie
Controversial actor Chevy Chase was instrumental in creating Saturday Night Live as one of the original cast members of the legendary sketch comedy series. However, he does not seem to be thrilled with the feature film that was made about the show’s very first episode coming together.
Saturday Night, directed by Jason Reitman, was released in theaters in September. Gotham actor Cory Michael Smith played the movie’s version of Chase, and while the film didn’t meet expectations at the box office, its reviewers were strong. Not everybody was a fan of the film, as it turns out, as one of the first people to give it a bad review was Chase himself. Per Deadline, Reitman was speaking with David Spade and Dana Carvey for the Fly on the Wall podcast when he shared Chase’s reaction to Saturday Night.

‘He’s Treating Me Like Sh*t’: Home Alone Director Details Chevy Chase Meeting That Made Him Quit Christmas Vacation
A few days after revealing that he had dropped out of directing Christmas Vacation because of Chevy Chase, Chris Columbus explained why.
“So, Chevy comes in to watch the movie, and he is there with [wife] Jayni and they watch the film, and he’s in the group, and he comes up to me after and he pats me on the shoulder and goes, ‘Well, you should be embarrassed,’” Reitman said. Spade joked that “you couldn’t even write it better” with the comment, while Carvey added that Chase “knows that’s funny, like that’s the roughest thing you could say to a director in the moment, or right up there.”
Well, you should be embarrassed.
Reitman continued, “I’m trying to balance it, because, in my head, I know, ‘Alright, I’m getting my own Chevy Chase moment that’s 1,000 percent only for me right now.’ And from a comedy point-of-view that’s really pure, and that’s kind of cool. But also, I just spent like two years of my life recreating this moment and trying to capture Chevy perfectly, and also even in the ego, find the humanity and give him a moment to be loved — no, none of that sh*t played. He’s not talking about that stuff.”

‘I Didn’t See It’: Gotham’s Cory Michael Smith Doubted His Casting as Chevy Chase in SNL Movie
Cory Michael Smith talks about playing Chevy Chase in the new film Saturday Night.
Saturday Night was co-written by Reitman and his Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Frozen Empire collaborator Gil Kenan. The film also starred Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels, Rachel Sennott as Rosie Shuster, Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner, Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Emily Fairn as Laraine Newman, Matt Wood as John Belushi, Lamorne Morris as Garrett Morris, and Kim Matula as Jane Curtin.
Dan Aykroyd Felt Differently About the Film
“Cracking a Head to applaud Jason Reitman’s triumphant SNL film,” Aykroyd said in an X post after seeing the movie. “Wow! What a propulsive, engaging, funny, beautifully cast and acted, suspenseful, adventurous, music-filled ride. A perfect window into the creative process at its highest level. Pretty accurate too. I was there that night and got to relive it wonderfully again. Congratulations Gil, Jason and Blumie. Don’t miss it whether you know the show or not. It is a stand-alone masterpiece and surefire candidate for Best Picture.”
Saturday Night is available digitally for rental or purchase.
