The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) opened its first corridor between Shahdara and Tis Hazari on December 24, 2002. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the 8.2-kilometer stretch of the Delhi Metro.

‘The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) today celebrated its 22nd anniversary of the commencement of its passenger operations. It was on 24th December, 2002 that the first Delhi Metro train, TS-01, was flagged off by the then Prime Minister, Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, introducing a new era of modern public transport in Delhi NCR,” reads the press release published by DMRC on December 25, 2024.

According to the media reports, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the then Prime Minister, purchased the first ticket for the Delhi Metro and traveled on its inaugural journey. Vajpayee traveled from Kashmiri Gate to Seelampur on the inaugural journey.
