DCU Fans Are All in for a David Leitch/Jason Momoa Lobo Movie

Filmmaker David Leitch wants to direct a Lobo movie for DC Studios. The Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde director pitched the idea to Jason Momoa in the comments of the actor’s social media post announcing that he would be portraying Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

“Let’s do a Lobo feature,” Leitch commented under Momoa’s Lobo casting announcement Instagram post (via X). A screenshot of the comment quickly went viral on the social media platform X, prompting several DC fans to chime in that they would love to see Leitch helm a Momoa-led Lobo movie. One remarked that the two teaming up for Lobo would result in “pure chaos,” while another expressed interest in seeing Lobo done in the style of Bullet Train, Leitch’s 2022 action comedy movie starring Brad Pitt. Of course, some fans were not in favor of a Lobo movie, especially one directed by Leitch, with many hoping that DC Studios will choose to focus on getting movies made for the DC Trinity (Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman) first before greenlighting Lobo.

James Gunn Finally Shares Update on The Flash’s DCU Future After Ezra Miller Controversy

James Gunn comments on the future of The Flash in the DCU following Ezra Miller’s run ending in controversy.

Who Is Lobo?

Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo first appeared in DC Comics’ Omega Men #3 in 1983 as an alien from the utopian planet of Czarnia who works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. He has been adapted multiple times for animation, most notably in the DC Animated Universe shows Superman and Justice League, but only once in live-action, with Emmett J. Scanlan playing Lobo in the short-lived Krypton.

Momoa is an avowed fan of Lobo, having shared repeatedly in past interviews that he has collected comics featuring the character his whole life. His casting roughly two years after he first hinted online that he would be portraying Lobo in the DCU, sharing to his followers that he had just finished an amazing meeting with DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. “I’ve got some really good news. Great news with Warner Bros. Amazing. Wish I could tell you, but here it is. Peter [Safran], I love you. James [Gunn], I love you. David [Zaslav]. Okay. To the future, to the future,” Momoa said back in January 2023.

As for Leitch, he’s no stranger to helming a comic book movie, having directed the Marvel movie Deadpool 2 starring Ryan Reynolds. After making his feature-length directorial debut, alongside Chad Stahelski, with John Wick (2014), Leitch largely departed the franchise (he’s still an executive producer) to focus on other directorial efforts, such as 2017’s Atomic Blonde, the Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw, and 2024’s The Fall Guy. He also knows how to deliver memorable action sequences on a small budget (both John Wick and Atomic Blonde had $30 million budgets), meaning that a Lobo movie could be made for far less than the average superhero movie (which seems to be around the $200 million mark these days).

Momoa will make his debut as Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is slated to begin production on Jan. 13, 2025. While plot details remain under wraps, the movie is inspired by Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Ana Nogueira adapted the comic for the big screen, with Craig Gillespie tapped to direct. Milly Alcock will headline the movie as the title character, Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, with Matthias Schoenaerts tapped to play the villain Krem of the Yellow Hill, and Eve Ridley cast as Ruthye Mary Knolle.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026, as the second film of the DCU.
