2025 Australian Women In Music Awards Winners
The 2025 Australian Women In Music Awards took place last night (9 October), paying tribute to First Nations women living in remote Australia, established and emerging artists, photographers, filmmakers, producers, techs, and all working behind the scenes.
More than 450 industry and community leaders, artists and dignitaries gathered at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall, in an evening which including performances from Aylish Ryan, Babyshakes Dillon, ixaras, Kate Miller-Heidke, Missy Higgins, Sarah McLeod, Arrkula Yinbayarra (Together We Sing) with Dr Shellie Morris AO, Donna Simpson & Vikki Thorn of The Waifs.
A total 21 awards were given out. Dr Shellie Morris AO picked up three, including the Universal Music Australia Lifetime Achievement Award. . . While the late, much-loved Ruby Hunter was posthumously inducted into the 2025 AWMA Honour Roll alongside Dame Olivia Newton-John AC, DBE; Renée Geyer; Dame Joan Sutherland OM, AC, DBE; and last year’s inductee Patricia ‘Little Pattie’ Amphlett OAM, and others.
Plus, the inaugural recipients of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Legacy award were songwomen Arrkula Yinbayarra and Dr Shellie Morris. The award was established in response to the 50th anniversary NAIDOC theme; The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.
“With the ever building community who gather at our events, Australian Women in Music continues to be a powerful cultural platform to ensure gender equality is at the centre of every aspect of the Australian music industry,” Founding Executive Producer and Program Director Vicki Gordon says.
“We pay tribute to the many among us and those who have gone before us, who have fought for safety, for opportunity, for creative excellence and the freedom to express the deepest truths of ourselves.”
The Inspiration Award went to Donna Simpson and Vikki Thorn from The Waifs – a group which formed more than 30 years ago. Plus The Ethical Engagement Consultancy Humanitarian Award went to Tina Broad who, 30 years ago, began a deep commitment to create a vibrant musical life.
Missy Higgins was the winner of the APRA AMOS Songwriter Award, while the Opera Impact Award went to Nicole Car, a professional Australian opera singer who has worked at Opera de Paris, Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerischer Staatsoper Munich, La Scala Milan. . . And of course, Opera Australia.
Chinese-Australian hip hop/R&B artist Grace Chia was awarded the SSI Diversity In Music Award, while Australian-Lebanese composer Katia Geha took home the City Of Gold Coast Emerging Artist Award.
The Tina Arena Special Impact Award went to Kylie Thompson, the Managing Director of Sorrento Strategic Music, which she founded 27 years ago. . . And Kimberley Galceran was awarded the Collarts Creative Leadership Award. She’s currently the Music Director of Dark Mofo and represents a wide range of female, gender-diverse, queer, and culturally distinct creators.
