‘5 per cent women in India have undergone hysterectomy’- The Week
About five per cent of women in India have undergone hysterectomy, with heavy menstrual bleeding being the most common condition among those who underwent the procedure.
The data from the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, and the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi, collected during 2015-16, analysed by researchers revealed the figures.
“The prevalence of hysterectomy among women aged 25-49 years was 4.8 per cent, which indicates that about five in every 100 Indian women aged 25-49 years have undergone a hysterectomy,” the study published in the Journal of Medical Evidence revealed.
It also found that women working in agriculture were 32 per cent more likely to undergo the surgical procedure compared to others.
What is a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of a woman’s uterus, which is the organ that supports the growth of a fetus during pregnancy. The procedure may also involve the removal of other reproductive organs such as the cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes.
When is a hysterectomy usually performed?
It is usually performed to treat uterine cancer, fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse and chronic pelvic pain.
According to the data, states including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Bihar recorded high hysterectomy rates.
“These states have been the focus of debate for needless hysterectomies in India,” citing previous reports of a high number of uterus-removal surgeries in Bihar, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, especially among low-income women, and high levels of health insurance coverage among women of reproductive age in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Also, about two-thirds of uterus-removal surgeries across India were performed in private health facilities
5 reasons for higher rates of hysterectomy
1. Menstrual taboos
2. Ignorance of gynaecological issues
3. Unhygienic sexual and reproductive health practices
4. Avoiding the pain of heavy menstruation
5. Fear of contracting cancer
