Salish Sea Early Music Festival announces 2025 Vancouver lineup

The Salish Sea Early Music Festival returns to Vancouver with an extensive early and classical music program spanning centuries of music history from 1525 to 1835. The festival will feature internationally renowned performers and a variety of unique concert programs.
This year’s lineup includes world-class artists like Ukrainian harpsichordist Olena Zhukova, viol virtuoso Tina Chancey, and Swiss harpsichordist Irene Roldàn, joined by acclaimed musicians including Montreal’s Mélisande Corriveau, Seattle’s Vicki Boeckman, and violist Lindsey Strand-Polyak from Whidbey Island.
Here’s what to expect.
January 24 – The Canzona 2025
Focuses on the origins of the Canzona and its evolution into the baroque sonata. Performed by Vicki Boeckman (renaissance recorders), Tina Chancey (tenor viol), Jeffrey Cohan (renaissance transverse flutes), and Anna Marsh (dulcian, a renaissance bassoon).
February 28 – The Chaconne with Les Voix Humaines
Explores the chaconne from the early 17th century to Bach. Performed by Susie Napper (viola da gamba and treble viol), Mélisande Corriveau (viola da gamba and pardessus de viol), Elisabeth Wright (harpsichord), and Jeffrey Cohan (baroque and renaissance flutes).
March 14 – The Trio Sonata
Features trio sonatas by Telemann, Guillemain, and Quentin. Performed by Bernward Lohr (harpsichord), Anne Röhrig (violin), Susie Napper (viola da gamba), and Jeffrey Cohan (baroque flute).
March 29 – Harpsichord Mystery
A program of harpsichord rarities and classics, including works by Byrd, Couperin, and Ukrainian composer Dmitry Bortnyansky. Performed by Olena Zhukova (solo harpsichord).
April 12 – European Tour 1690-1790
Covers a century of European baroque and classical music from France, Italy, Scotland, Germany, and Ukraine. Performed by Olena Zhukova (harpsichord) and Jeffrey Cohan (baroque flute).
May 6 – Musique de la Chambre of Louis XIV
Features music from Louis XIV’s court, including works by Lully, Jacquet de La Guerre, Marais, and Hotteterre. Performed by Caroline Nicolas (viola da gamba), William Simms (theorbo and baroque guitar), and Jeffrey Cohan (baroque and renaissance flutes).
May 20 – Concerti from the Court of Frederick the Great
Includes concerti by CPE Bach, Quantz, and Frederick the Great, king of Prussia. Performed by David Schrader (harpsichord), Jeffrey Cohan (baroque flute), Elizabeth Phelps (baroque violin), Courtney Kuroda (baroque violin), and Lindsey Strand-Polyak (baroque viola).
June 10 – Beethoven’s Flute, Viola & Guitar
Showcases repertoire for flute, viola, and guitar from Beethoven’s era. Performed by Elizabeth Blumenstock (viola), Oleg Timofeyev (seven-string guitar circa Moscow 1820), and Jeffrey Cohan (eight-keyed flute circa London 1820).
July 11 – The 18th-Century Harpsichord in Spain
Highlights the keyboard music of Scarlatti, de Albero, de Nebra, and Seixas from 18th-century Spain. Performed by Irene Roldàn (solo harpsichord).
