Acclaimed Animated Cat Movie ‘Flow’ New On Digital Streaming This Week

Flow—a critically acclaimed animated movie about a cat’s survival during a massive flood—arrives on digital streaming this week.
Flow opened in theaters in limited release in theaters on Nov. 22. The logline for the film reads, “Cat is a solitary animal, but as its home is devastated by a great flood, he finds refuge on a boat populated by various species and will have to team up with them despite their differences.”
According to When to Stream, Flow will arrive on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Prime Video, which confirms the release date, noted that the film will be available for digital purchase for $17.99.
Typically, new films on streaming are available for rent for $5 less than the purchase price, so viewers can expect to be able the rent Flow for $12.99 for a 48-hour period.
In addition to Prime Video, Flow will be available on a variety of digital platforms including AppleTV and VUDU.
‘Flow’ Has Emerged As A Major Contender This Awards Season
Directed by Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis, Flow has been widely embraced by critics and industry awards organizations.
In addition to being nominated for Best Animated Feature by the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes, Flow earned a Best Animated Feature – Independent nomination from the Annie Awards.
In addition, Flow has been nominated for Best International Feature by the Film Independent Spirit Awards and was named Best European Animated Feature by the European Film Awards.

According to Box Office Mojo, Flow has earned nearly $2.3 million domestically and $4.2 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $6.6 million. Per Fast Company, Flow had a production budget of around $3.8 million before prints and advertising costs.
Rotten Tomatoes critics collectively gave Flow a 97% “fresh” rating based on 107 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus reads, “Thanks to its innovative animation and mature themes, going with this Flow proves irresistible.”
In addition, Flow received a 94% “fresh” rating on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 500-plus reviews.

In a November 2024 interview with Fast Company, Zilbalodis said that the production team for Flow was tiny by Hollywood standards—around 50 people—with about 20 of them being part of the core group.
“Usually it was just two or three people, including me, in the studio, and in the first few years, it was just me. It was a pretty small production, but it’s much bigger than my previous film, which I made myself,” Zilbalodis told Fast Company. “This was maybe about 50 times bigger in terms of the budget, but it’s actually 50 times smaller than most Disney films.”
