2 music series planned for January in Parksville and Qualicum Beach

To ring in the New Year, Parksville and Qualicum music fans can enjoy two separate concert series, each focusing on roots and folk music.

The first, titled Full Spectrum Folk, is being presented by the Oceanside Community Arts Council with concerts held at the McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville, according to a news release.

The second series will be presented by Oceanside Folk/Roots and Blues Club, with shows located at the Rotary House in Qualicum Beach.

The concept of the series is to promote a comprehensive selection of folk music styles, including, blues, Americana, Celtic, world and Indigenous.

“I’m really excited to bring some of these acts… here,” said concert promoter Mick Sherlock. “Blues is a musical form mostly seen in bars these days, so it’s a thrill to be able to present boogie woogie piano maestro David Vest in both Qualicum Beach and Parksville. The same goes for Indigenous music which is rarely seen. It’s a great opportunity to be able to provide a performance platform to Saskatchewan’s The North Sound. They are a fine up and coming Indigenous act with something to say.”

Full Spectrum Folk kicks off 2025 with a show by Café Olé on Jan. 18 at the MAC.

The Qualicum Beach season starts with local bluegrass singer Jenny Lester who will showcase her new all-star band on Jan. 10 at the Rotary House. Other concerts include flamenco, folk, blues, world music, and a Tribute to Gram Parsons.

“The legacy of Parsons is hard to calculate,” said Sherlock. “He was instrumental in the formation of The Eagles, an influence on the Rolling Stones, and an important member of The Byrds. We have an all-star band for that show, including Sue Medley who toured with both Bob Dylan and John Mellencamp. It’s a very exciting project.”
