Since her Emmy-winning turn in “Shōgun” and rise to fame on “Pachinko,” Sawai made a name for herself not only as one of the most exciting actresses currently working, but also as a fashion force. Sawai is the recipient of the Fashion Newcomer award at the 2025 Style Awards, honoring her powerful red carpet presence and fashion choices.
Sawai wore a custom look by Vera Wang for her history-making win at the 2024 Emmy Awards, where she became the first actress of Asian descent to win the award for Best Leading Actress in a Drama Series, and the first Japanese actress to ever win an Emmy.

“It was very meaningful to me to be able to wear Vera’s dress at my first Emmys, that also could have been — and ended up somehow becoming — a historical moment,” Sawai told WWD, reflecting on the significant moment.
Sawai also earned a 2025 Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series — Drama. The awards show takes place Sunday, Jan. 5.

The actress collaborates with stylist Karla Welch on her red carpet attire, which gave her room to experiment and understand her own style. “At that time, I don’t think I really understood what I looked good in,” Sawai told WWD.
“As we started to work together more, I feel like now I know what I look good in and what I feel comfortable in. Karla also knows how I feel when I’m wearing certain things. And it’s so easy now, because everything that I try on is great,” she says, adding that familiarity has allowed her to take bigger fashion risks. “I’m also now able to experiment a little bit more,” she adds. “I’m happy to challenge myself if I know that I’m going to feel good in it.”
Women’s Wear Daily honored the fashion and beauty tastemakers, muses and legends whose creativity, craft and style create magic on the red carpet at the inaugural WWD Style Awards presented Friday in Los Angeles. Honorees included Tracee Ellis Ross, Anna Sawai, Wes Gordon, Kate Young, Chris Appleton, Pati Dubroff, Iván Pol and Jamie Taylor.
