Deadpool 2 Director Doubles Down on Making a DCU Lobo Movie

David Leitch really wants to direct a Lobo movie starring Jason Momoa. The Deadpool 2 and The Fall Guy filmmaker recently doubled down on his desire to helm a feature-length movie featuring the alien bounty hunter for James Gunn’s DC Universe.

On Jan. 3, Momoa shared a video on Instagram, confirming that he had received the screenplay for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the upcoming DCU movie in which he will make his debut as Lobo. The video shows the actor sitting by a fire with a lit cigar in one hand (for the unaware, Lobo loves cigars) and the screenplay on his lap. The title page bears a watermark reading, “FOR LOBO’S EYES ONLY.” The social media post has so far amassed over 72,000 likes, including one from Leitch, who also commented, “Lobo solo movie :)? I’m in [Jason Momoa]! It’s a story we were born to tell. This character is all you.”

It’s a story we were born to tell.

Leitch had previously voiced his interest in directing a Lobo movie earlier this week when he commented on Momoa’s Instagram post announcing his casting as Lobo. A screenshot of Leitch’s comment quickly went viral on the social media platform X, with most of the DCU fandom agreeing that the filmmaker was a good fit for the character, who first appeared in DC Comics’ Omega Men #3 in 1983.

Momoa is set to be the second actor to portray Lobo in live-action, after Emmett J. Scanlan in the short-lived DC series Krypton. Lobo, an alien from the utopian planet of Czarnia who works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter, is typically depicted as an enemy (and sometimes ally) of Superman and Supergirl, appearing in several animated Man of Steel adaptations, like the DC Animated Universe cartoon Superman: The Animated Series and the Tomorrowverse movie Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

David Leitch Has Directed 6 Movies

Leitch is no stranger to the comic book genre, having helmed the Marvel movie Deadpool 2 as his third feature-length directorial effort. After getting his start in Hollywood as a stunt performer, Leitch made his directorial debut (albeit in an uncredited capacity) alongside Chad Stahelski with the 2014 action movie, John Wick. The movie’s success quickly led to several directing opportunities for Leitch, such as 2017’s Atomic Blonde and the 2019 Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw. His most recent directorial efforts were the action comedies Bullet Train (2022) and The Fall Guy (2024).
