Panned Movie ‘Culpa Mia (My Fault)’ Joins ‘Culpa Tuya (Your Fault)’ at the Top of Streaming Chart

One of the most heavily criticized movies in Prime Video’s history is back near the top of the charts thanks to the release of its equally panned sequel. Culpa Mia (My Fault)
introduced the streaming world to the adaptation of Mercedes Ron’s Wattpad novel in 2023, but the December release of the sequel Culpa Tuya (Your Fault) has seen the movie with a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score leap back to the top three on the streamer’s global chart.

Despite there being plenty of movies for audiences to choose from, including the recent arrival of praised films such as Gareth Edwards’ The Creator and the Anne Hathaway-led The Idea of You, the internet sensation has defied its high volume of negative reviews for a second time to surpass them all. The Spanish-language romantic drama franchise seems to be a classic tale of a viral story being stretched to first a series of novels, and then a series of movies with a paper-thin plot. While viewership has soared, reviews from critics have been beyond scathing.

Culpa Mia tells the story of Noah, a young woman who finds herself feeling a romantic pull towards her stepbrother following her mother’s marriage to a new husband. Like many similar films to have been developed from Wattpad stories, that single line pretty much sums up not only the plot of this movie, but that of the sequel, and the third novel in the “saga.” Critics, as expected, hate both movies. Audiences…well that is a little more complicated.

Why Do Critics Hate Culpa Mia so Much?

Prime Video

As you would expect from such a viral sensation, Culpa Mia has some simple elements that people have latched onto that may have made good reading, but don’t necessarily translate well onto screen. Out of the 13 reviews that the two movies share between them (which really is unlucky), only one of them gives anything like a positive recommendation. The consensus needs no explanation, as it cites the combination of wooden acting, no plot, and so many clichés it is hard to work out where one ends and the next one begins.

Audiences, however, love the movie. The Popcornmeter sits at 86%, and on the whole the film delivers exactly what those who have read the books wanted. With the majority of reviewers having read Ron’s original story, and the novels it became, it is not hard to see why Prime Video were satisfied to develop the two sequels required to tell the whole story.

Amazon found a winning formula with the drama My Fault. Here are ten films to catch up on if you loved the movie.

Sequel Culpa Tuya has been another huge success in terms of viewership. The follow-up has been at the top of the Prime Video chart since its release, and has revived interest in its predecessor to boot. However, the new movie has failed to connect with audiences quite as it should. In fact, the reviews have been incredibly bad, calling out the movie as being “painful,” “stupid,” and, above all else, “a middle finger to the book series.” Although many reviewers have professed that they will not be watching the third installment, we all know by now that when Culpa Nuestra (Out Fault) arrives on Prime Video next year, all three of these movies are going to be pushing aside some much worthier competition with ease.
