Citroen Basalt Price Hike Jan 2025

Citroen Basalt Price Hike

One of the newest car manufacturers to enter Indian market is Citroen. The company’s latest model, Basalt Coupe SUV, has been launched in India with an aggressive pricing strategy. However, the company has raised prices effective immediately and the new prices start from Rs 8.25 lakh (Ex-sh), up by Rs 26,000.

Citroen Basalt Price Hike Jan 2025

When launched in August 2024, Basalt shocked the Indian automotive fraternity with an aggressive pricing strategy. It was a compact SUV that was priced at the level of a sub 4m SUV. The company was expecting to push great volumes, but the reality has not been kind to Citroen India.

Last month sales for Citroen Basalt stood at 79 units only, despite the rather attractive pricing. Come 2025, Citroen Basalt’s pricing will be less attractive than it used to be as it just witnessed a price hike. Maximum ceiling of this price hike is Rs 28,000 on Ex-sh pricing, when compared to launch prices.

Citroen Basalt is offered in You, Plus and Max trim levels. Base You trim is NA Petrol only and top-spec Max trim is Turbo only. Mid-spec Plus gets both NA Petrol and Turbo Petrol options. The base You 1.2 MT variant price has been hiked by Rs 26,000. Making the base price Rs 8.25 lakh (Ex-sh), as opposed to Rs 7.99 lakh launch price.

Mid-spec Plus 1.2 MT stays the same at Rs 9.99 lakh. However, Plus 1.2 Turbo MT and Plus 1.2 Turbo AT variants witness a price hike of Rs 28,000 (Ex-sh). Top-spec Max 1.2 Turbo MT variant and its dual-tone counterpart get an equal price hike of Rs 21,000 (Ex-sh) each. Lastly, we have Max 1.2 Turbo AT variant and its dual-tone counterpart, dearer by Rs 17,000 (Ex-sh).

Dismal Sales Performance

Indian automotive market is maturing and more OEMs are willing to experiment with car designs and shapes. One such shape is Coupe SUV, which Tata Curvv and Citroen Basalt have embraced. Although both Basalt and Curvv have been launched at the same time, sales performance of these vehicles is polar opposite.

Where Citroen Basalt is concerned, sales peaked in the launch month of August 2024 at 579 units, followed by 341 units sold in September 2024 and 221 units sold in October 2024. Sales hit rock bottom in November 2024 at just 47 units and followed by 79 units sold in December 2024. Total sales since launch is 1,627 units with an average of 325 units per month.

Citroen Basalt Crash Tested – Bharat NCAP

Interestingly, Citroen Basalt was crash-tested by Bharat NCAP and was awarded 4 Stars in October 2024. Speculations suggested that sales will skyrocket from there. But in November 2024, sales hit rock bottom, suggesting that buyers just aren’t interested in investing in a brand that is not able to deliver at-least one good product.
