Teresa Woodruff, former MSU president, wins National Medal of Science

EAST LANSING — Teresa Woodruff, former interim president at Michigan State University, won her second presidential award Friday.

The researcher and former leader of MSU was presented with the National Medal of Science on Friday. Arati Prabhakar, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, presented Woodruff with the medal at a ceremony at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C.

The medal, presented to her for her work in oncofertility, is Woodruff’s first National Medal of Science. Her research combines oncology — the study of cancer prevention — and reproductive health and focuses on how young cancer survivors, or those still undergoing treatment, can plan for their “future fertility.”

The National Medal of Science is the highest recognition the nation can bestow on scientists and engineers, MSU said in a release. Woodruff is the first person from the university to receive it.

“I’m humbled to receive this award,” Woodruff said in the release. “I have had the honor and pleasure to work with so many students and collaborators throughout my career. My fundamental belief is science should help tomorrow’s patients be treated better than today’s.”

In 2011, former President Barack Obama presented Woodruff with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring in an Oval Office ceremony.

In March last year, Woodruff returned to her former role as MSU Foundation Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, Reproductive Biology, and Biomedical Engineering. She is currently on research leave until May, when she will return to teaching classes on campus.

Woodruff was named interim president of the university on Oct. 31, 2022, after former President Samuel Stanley resigned.
