A new exhibit at the West Vancouver Art Museum showcases the works of two Suzhou-born artists who now live in BC.
Neighbours | 邻·礼: Xiangmei Su and Jiangang Su, running from January 22 to March 8, highlights the ways in which these artists draw on their traditions while engaging with their new cultural landscape.
Xiangmei Su’s works intertwine the rich textile history of Suzhou with her family’s migration story, creating installations that bridge past and present, East and West. Meanwhile, Jiangang Su merges centuries-old Chinese literati painting and Tang dynasty poetry with the flora and fauna of Vancouver, blending traditional techniques with contemporary influences. Together, their pieces offer an exploration of heritage, identity, and the evolution of cultural traditions in a globalized world.
Curated by Xianjun Song, who has a history of fostering artistic dialogue between Eastern and Western traditions, the exhibition invites audiences to reflect on the intersections of place, culture, and human connection. Neighbours provides a unique window into how ancient artistic practices can be relocated and reimagined to create new perspectives while preserving their essence.
