British over-50s are unaffected by the cost of planning their holidays in 2025, according to research by Saga Holidays.

The research showed that just 10% of travelers in this age group said that increases in holiday prices had led them to change their travel plans this year.

85% said they had the same or more budget for their holidays compared to last year, highlighting a “healthy financial resilience” among the over-50s, as Saga Holidays commented.

Another finding of the survey is that 95% of Saga customers are either planning or have already booked their trip in 2025. Specifically:

More than half (55%) of respondents have already booked at least one holiday trip in 2025.
Nearly a third (32%) of respondents will aim to travel four or more times in the next 12 months with 24% planning at least three holidays.
Across all age groups over 50 surveyed, 90% expect to travel more in 2025 than last year, with those aged 50-59 showing the greatest tendency to do so (35%), followed by those aged 60-69 (30%). .
Of the 5% who said they did not plan to travel at all in 2025, 49% cited mobility issues, 32% financial constraints and 20% preferring to stay at home.

Holidays combined with hobbies and activities

Almost two-thirds of respondents expressed interest in combining their holiday with a hobby or subject, such as birdwatching, archaeology, or astronomy.

Relaxation (58%), adventure (47%), and exploring different cultures (35%) are the top motivations for a holiday in 2025.

70% of respondents planning to go on holiday in 2025 plan to go to Europe, with the majority of this being evenly split across all age groups. Those aged 50-69 are most interested in a European holiday.

Among their preferred choices, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, and Croatia stand out as Saga’s top five European destinations for the year.

Tour bookings to Europe are increasing in popularity, up 5% on last year. River cruising also remains a popular choice for European holidays in 2025.

Saga Holidays reported that bookings last week were up 68% compared to the same period last year.

The survey was conducted among almost 3,000 members of its ‘Experienced Voices’ customer panel and combined with booking data for 2024 and 2025.
Saga Holidays’ product director, Zoe Tasker, said: “Our research this year paints an encouraging picture of the over-50s traveler.

“Despite broader economic uncertainties, they remain committed to their annual vacations and are looking to travel more and increase their travel spend over the next 12 months.

“The rise in special interest vacations for 2025 shows how travelers are now looking to combine their hobbies and interests with their travel plans. Rather than learning something new, they prefer to indulge in what they already love – whether it’s tracing historical footsteps, exploring culinary delights, or engaging with arts and culture – while enjoying a carefully curated vacation experience.

“Looking ahead to the ‘must visit’ destinations for the year ahead, Europe is set to shine, but long-haul destinations are also taking center stage.

“The US, South Africa, Costa Rica, India, and Japan are all experiencing an increase in demand for departures in 2025 across our product range, reflecting travelers’ ever-growing appetite for far-flung, exceptional adventures.”
