Girls hockey results for Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025: Kober, Mayo shut out rival Century/JM – Post Bulletin
ROCHESTER — Grace Kober has come up big for the Mayo girls hockey team again and again — and again — throughout her high school goaltending career.
The senior did it again Thursday night against the Spartans’ biggest rival. Kober only faced 11 shots — and she stopped them all, including recording the 2,000th save of her career — as Mayo knocked off Century/John Marshall 3-0 at Graham Arena.
The Spartans (5-5-0 Big Nine Conference, 8-8-0 overall) earned a split of the season series against the Panthers, who won the first intra-city matchup this season, 3-1, back on Dec. 5 at the Rochester Recreation Center.
Kober was strong in that meeting, too, making 30 stops as Century/JM put a whopping 33 shots on goal.
Thursday night was a different story, though, as the Spartans were outstanding defensively, and limited Kober’s workload.
Sophomore forward Marley Smith again came up big for Mayo, recording her second two-goal game in the past three outings. She had two goals and three assists in an 8-0 win at Austin on Jan. 2, before scoring twice on Thursday against Century/JM.
Smith now leads the team in goals (11) and points (16).
She opened the scoring at the midpoint of Thursday’s game, scoring 7:28 into the second period for a 1-0 Mayo lead. That held up as the game-winning goal and that’s how the score remained until Smith scored a short-handed goal with just 2:03 to play in the game.
Milania Black added an empty-net goal 61 seconds later to cap the scoring and give Mayo its eighth victory of the season.
Isabella Scranton made 23 saves for Century/JM, which dropped to 5-6-0 in the Big Nine and 9-9-1 overall. The Panthers play at Winona at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Mayo is off until Tuesday, when it hosts Northfield at 7:15 p.m.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
