Jurassic Park’s Worst Movie Is Secretly The Reason Why The Franchise Isn’t Stopping After Chris Pratt’s World Trilogy
Since the release of its first film in 1993, the Jurassic Park franchise has become one of the highest-grossing film series of all time. Following the original trilogy’s success, the Jurassic Park franchise expanded into Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, gaining new audiences with a modern trilogy featuring Chris Pratt as Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard as Claire. Jurassic World was a massive hit and got two sequels, both of which also did great at the box office.
With an impressive $6 billion total at the worldwide box office, the popular dinosaur franchise does not look to be slowing down soon, especially as Jurassic World 4 is scheduled for release in 2025. However, despite the franchise’s success and upcoming seventh movie, Jurassic Park has had its ups and downs over the years. Yet one film in particular has been deemed the worst in the series, at least in terms of critical reception, Jurassic World Dominion.
Dominion Is The Worst-Received Jurassic Park Movie (But Still Grossed $1 Billion)
Jurassic World Dominion Has A 29% Score On Rotten Tomatoes
Despite grossing $1 billion at the box office, Jurassic World Dominion is the lowest-rated Jurassic Park movie on Rotten Tomatoes with a shocking 29% Tomatometer. This makes Jurassic World Dominion the worst-received movie in both the Jurassic World trilogy and the franchise as a whole. In comparison, Jurassic Park III had the lowest rating for the first trilogy with a 49% Tomatometer, which still puts it leagues above Jurassic World Dominion. What makes this so shocking is that Jurassic World Dominion’s cast brought back iconic characters as an ode to the originals, but this was not enough to save it.

Dominion Never Actually Ended The Jurassic World Franchise
Jurassic World: Dominion may have appeared to end the beloved franchise after its poor critical reception but 2 exciting developments prove otherwise.
Although Jurassic World Dominion has some of the most interesting dinosaurs in the franchise – introducing modern feathered dinosaurs since their discovery – and a great cast, the movie was still ill-received. Some critics condemned Jurassic World Dominion’s lack of thrill seen in the other movies now that dinosaurs are commonplace in the world, while other critics complained of “nostalgia bait” in using Jurassic Park’s cast to rehash previous scenes in the franchise. Yet, despite the movie’s negative reception, Jurassic World Dominion still grossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, demonstrating how powerful the franchise still is.
Jurassic World Dominion’s Box Office Sent A Clear Message About The Franchise
People Still Want To See Jurassic Park Movies
Jurassic World Dominion’s box office success shows that the Jurassic Park franchise will most likely still have an audience even if a particular movie is rated poorly. Jurassic World Dominion had a successful opening weekend at the box office, which only just falls short of its predecessor, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, by $3 million. The critical reception wasn’t able to slow it down, with the film ending its run with over $1 billion at the box office. In fact, the movie has the third highest Popcornmeter in the Jurassic Park franchise, showcasing a divide between critic and audience opinion.

While the box office numbers do suggest that fans will show up to Jurassic Park/World movies no matter what, the franchise should still be wary for its next movie considering each Jurassic World movie has earned less with each installment. Jurassic World Rebirth can break this box office trend with its “rebirth” premise, as Chris Pratt’s 2015 reboot did prove successful for the Jurassic Park franchise. However, to do so, it must avoid the mistakes made by The Lost World and Dominion and deliver something truly fresh and exciting.
