Morocco Sets Record for Apple Imports in 2024 Amid Growing Consumer Demand

Over the past five years, Morocco’s apple imports have shown a consistent upward trend, with 2024 reflecting a nearly 50% increase compared to 2020. The exception to this growth occurred in 2023, which saw a slight decline. Notably, this record import comes despite Morocco’s strengthening position as a domestic apple producer. In 2022, Morocco was ranked the second-largest apple producer in Africa, following South Africa.

Historically, Moroccan consumers have favored locally grown apples, with imports typically peaking in spring and summer when domestic supplies from the previous harvest are depleted. However, there has been a marked shift in consumer preferences. Imported varieties such as Gala Royal, Golden Delicious, Fuji, Golden Smoothie, Ozark Gold, Anna, and Starking Delicious have gained popularity, reflecting a growing appetite for international options.

The bulk of Morocco’s apple imports comes from European countries, with Italy leading the pack at 46% of total imports from January to October 2024. Spain accounts for 27%, followed by Poland at 13%. Italy and Spain have significantly increased their apple exports to Morocco compared to the previous year, while exports from Poland and Portugal have declined. In total, 13 countries supplied apples to Morocco in 2024.

This diversification of sources and rising demand underscores Morocco’s evolving fruit market, driven by a combination of local production growth and international trade partnerships.
