LaRosa departs as CHS football coach after six seasons | Sports and Recreation

Chino High School head coach Joey LaRosa is out as head football coach after six seasons, athletic director Mike Hinkle confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

“All I can say is LaRosa is no longer coaching football at Chino High School,” Mr. Hinkle stated in a text.

He did not offer any other comments. Coach LaRosa was reached Wednesday but said he could not comment on the situation.

Chino Valley Unified School District spokeswoman Andi Johnston said assistant football coach Michael Blackburn was named interim coach until a permanent coach is hired.

Coach LaRosa was hired in February 2019 after the Cowboys finished 3-7 in each of the 2017 and 2018 seasons and had less than 40 players in the football program.

He finished 36-26 overall, won league titles in 2020, 2023 and 2024 and finished 3-4 in CIF-Southern Section playoff games. Coach LaRosa’s best season came in 2023 when the Cowboys finished 10-0 in the regular season, won the Sierra League title and advanced as far as the second-round of the Division 6 playoffs.

In Coach LaRosa’s last season in 2024, the Cowboys finished 5-7 overall, 4-1 in league to tie Covina for the Hacienda League championship, and went to the second round of the Division 10 playoffs before losing to Silverado, 35-32.
