ROCHESTER — Century/John Marshall scored its first goal of Saturday’s game with one of its players in the penalty box.
It scored its second goal at even strength.
Then the Panthers scored on a power play.
Just like that, 11 minutes into a Big Nine Conference boys hockey game at Graham Arena 1, the Panthers led by three goals.
It was a strong start for a team playing some of its best hockey of the season — and a start that led Century/JM to its eighth consecutive victory, 10-1 against Mayo.
The Panthers improve to 5-1-0 in the Big Nine Conference and 12-3-0 overall, including 12 wins in their past 13 games.
Mayo drops to 1-4-0, 4-10-0.
Century/JM led 3-1 after one period thanks to those first three goals — a short-handed tally by Jarek Solak 4:30 in, an even-strength goal by Brekken DeWeese at the 7:00 mark and a power play goal by Ole Fevold 10:47 into the game.
Mayo’s John Kachmarzinski answered for the Spartans, 18 seconds after Fevold’s goal, but that was all the scoring for Mayo on Saturday.
The Panthers tacked on four goals in the second and three in the third.
Solak, Calvin O’Reilly and Fevold scored two goals each, with Fevold contributing three assists, for a five-point game.
Brock Clarey had a goal and three assists, while senior defenseman Owyn Tomminello had three assists.
Kyle Lappi played the first two periods in goal for the Panthers, stopping 12 of 13 shots. Thor Shelley played the final period and stopped all six shots he faced.
Century/JM plays at Mankato East at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
Mayo plays at Northfield at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
