Meet woman, daughter of India’s oldest billionaire, she once led Rs 530000 crore govt company, now works…

After working for over 35 years, Sangwan retired from the company in 2018.

Several businesswomen have successfully led top companies in India. One such woman who once led India’s largest insurance company, LIC, is Usha Sangwan. She became the first-ever woman Managing Director of the government-backed Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) in 2013. The 67-year-old joined LIC as a Direct Recruit Officer in 1981 and steadily climbed the corporate ladder.

She is the daughter of India’s oldest billionaire, Lachhman Das Mittal (94), founder of Sonalika Group. He has a real-time net worth of USD 5.6 billion, as per Forbes. After working for over 35 years, Sangwan retired from LIC in 2018. The market cap of the company is Rs 5.30 lakh crore, as of January 10.

She was born in Punjab and completed her primary education at Government Model Middle School in Chandigarh. Sangwan holds a master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management from IGNOU. She is a licentiate from the Insurance Institute of India.

Currently, Sangwan works as an independent director in several companies including Tata Motors, Torrent Power, Tata Technologies and Axis Bank boards. She has also served on the Boards of several national and international companies. She was featured in Forbes List of 50 Most Powerful Business Women in Asia in 2015.
