Richards, Ramharack top Sports Awards | Sports
Track athlete Jereem Richards and female cricketer Karishma Ramharack were named the First Citizens Sports Foundation Senior Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year respectively, when the organisation held its 2024 Sports Awards and 2025 Hall of Fame Induction ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad Saturday night .
And cyclists Makaira Wallace and Jelani Nedd were bestowed the Youth Sportswoman Youth Sportsman of the Year accolades.
Richards lost out on the bronze medal by four-hundredths of a second to Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga after running a blinder from the outside lane nine, speeding to a 43.78-seconds clocking at last year’s Paris Olympics.
However, his valiant effort from an unlikely starting position was not all in vain, as his time was good enough to record a new national record. The performance also propelled the T&T sprinter into 16th spot on the all-time Men’s 400m performance list.
West Indies women’s cricketer Ramharack, a right-arm off-spinner stood out at the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup in the United Arab Emirates where she helped West Indies to the semi-finals of the competition with her six wickets captured at an average of 13.83. Her best performance came against Bangladesh at Sharjah, where she claimed four scalps for 17 runs, which led to an eight-wicket victory and the Player of the Match prize.
Ramharack was also outstanding during the One-Day International series in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. During the former contest, she took four wickets in total, with best figures of three for 48 in a two-wicket triumph at Karachi. In the latter showdown, she also took four wickets, with a best of two for 29 captured in the second game at Hambantota.
The gala show – which saw over 90 athletes being nominated from over 30 national sporting organisations – was staged under the title of “The Power of Perseverance.”
