Why Is It India’s Most Expensive Expressway?

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway holds the title of India’s most expensive expressway due to its high toll charges, which are adjusted annually. The toll increases by 6 percent every year, with a cumulative rise of 18 percent every three years. In April 2023, the toll for cars rose from Rs 270 to Rs 320, while vehicles like mini buses and tempos now pay Rs 495, up from Rs 420. A single trip by car costs Rs 336, translating to approximately Rs 3.40 per kilometer.

Speed Limits And Expansion Plans

Unlike other expressways with speed limits of up to 180 km/h, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway enforces a maximum speed limit of 100 km/h to ensure safety. Future expansion plans include the addition of two more lanes and the construction of eight tunnels, with four near Madap and Bhatan and two at Kamshet.

The expressway begins at Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai and ends at Kiwale in Pune. In addition to boosting connectivity between two major cities, the expressway has been pivotal in facilitating trade and travel across the region.
