The Russo Brothers Explain Return to Helm the New Avenger Movies

Prior to Marvel Studios’ confirmation at SDCC, which also included the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. would make his way back to the MCU, there were rumors that the Russo Brothers were in talks to direct the fifth and sixth Avengers films. Since then, the internet had mixed reactions to the news. In a new interview with Empire, the duo explained why they decided to come back.

Daredevil’s Next MCU Appearance Seemingly Spoiled by Charlie Cox Workout Photo
A workout post featuring Charlie Cox may have prematurely announced Daredevil’s next MCU appearance following Born Again Season 1.
2024 was a relatively slow year for Marvel, with only one theatrical release, the $1.3 billion Deadpool & Wolverine, and two new shows, Echo and Agatha All Along, plus one season of What If…?. In 2025, there will be more theatrical releases, with Captain America: Brave New World, the misfits team-up in Thunderbolts*, and the debut of Marvel’s first family in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. All of these will lead to the upcoming two Avengers films, scheduled for 2026 and 2027.
We ended up stumbling upon an idea that activated all of us.
“Endgame was the end, and it took a little time for us to begin to think about it as something other than an end,” Anthony Russo explained.
He continued, “We’re very close with Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios CEO, and Lou [D’Esposito, Marvel Studios’ Co-President] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years. We’ve talked about a lot of ideas.”
When the idea for Avengers: Secret Wars came to life, he explains, “Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon an idea that activated all of us. You couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.’“

Ana de Armas Reportedly in Talks to Make MCU Debut in Avengers: Doomsday
The lead star of the upcoming John Wick spinoff film could soon feature in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“There were ideas that we were trying to wrap our heads around that preceded this one, and we just never found the story,” Joe Russo explained. It was only when they found out how the Avengers: Secret Wars comic arc would work in the MCU that they were all in. “I remember calling Steve and said, ‘Hey, crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do Secret Wars?’ You were like, ‘F**k no. Absolutely not.’ And then you hung up. And the next morning at 7.30 you called and were like, ‘Alright, I have an idea.’“
Every Marvel Character in Avengers: Doomsday
The upcoming fifth Avengers film, Avengers: Doomsday, was originally supposed to be a completely different film. Initially titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the superhero team-up movie changed completely after Jonathan Majors’ legal issues, who played Kang the Conqueror. The MCU shifted the entire story until landing a brand-new supervillain: Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. He will not reprise his role as Iron Man/ Tony Stark, although it’s unclear how that will play out.
Aside from Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans will make his way back to the MCU, as well. It’s unclear in which capacity, but Hayley Atwell will also return as Peggy Carter. Other characters confirmed to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday are Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, and the Fantastic Four. Spider-Man hasn’t been officially confirmed but Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is expected to appear in the film, as well.
Avengers: Doomsday premieres in theaters on May 1, 2024.
