Wrexham AFC player Billy Waters to set to join Oldham Athletic
Oldham Athletic have agreed a deal to sign Wrexham forward Billy Waters, according to recent reports.
Waters spent the first half of the season on loan at National League side Halifax Town, and he’s set to remain in the fifth tier, with Pete O’Rourke reporting that the 30-year-old is set to join Micky Mellon’s Oldham Athletic side.

With his contract at The Racecourse set to expire at the end of the season, Wrexham are looking to offload the forward who has made little impact since joining them as a National League side back in March 2023 and news of a move to Boundary Park brings his miserable stay with the Red Dragons to an end.
Billy Waters set to complete a move to Oldham Athletic
It remains to be seen whether the deal is a loan or a permanent move, but it’s safe to assume that Waters’ Wrexham career is over regardless, as he’s out of contract at the end of the season.
The 30-year-old has made just eight appearances for the Red Dragons, one of those coming during the 2022/23 campaign, and another seven at the beginning of last season, but Waters failed to find the back of the net and spent the remainder of the season on loan at Doncaster Rovers.
His time at Doncaster didn’t go to plan either, failing to find the back of the net, but he’s managed to find some form in the National League with Halifax, and he’s done enough to attract interest from Oldham.
Waters scored five goals in 18 appearances for Halifax, showing he’s capable of scoring goals in the National League, and he’s set to complete a move to Mellon’s Oldham side, who are currently fifth in the table and in the mix for League Two promotion.
Oldham have been out of the EFL since League Two relegation in 2022, and they’ll hope that Waters’ arrival can propel them back to the EFL at the third time of asking.
Billy Waters’ Oldham Athletic move makes sense for all parties
Waters has no future at Wrexham with the Red Dragons flying high in League One, and a January exit where he’ll play regularly makes sense for all parties.

Wrexham free up space in their squad and on the wage bill by offloading Waters, and Oldham get a forward with bags of experience who is capable of firing them back to League Two.
Waters’ brief spell at Halifax would have gone a long way to helping the 30-year-old regain some confidence, and Oldham are set to benefit from his arrival during the second half of the season.
