Boeing chief visits India on his first overseas tour
Boeing President and Chief Executive Officer Kelly Ortberg is visiting India on his first overseas trip since taking over as the head of the US aerospace maker last August.
Ortberg called on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Delhi on Tuesday. During his three-day trip, he will also address Boeing employees and meet customers.
“Our partnership with India continues to grow and Boeing is fully committed to advancing its Atma Nirbhar Bharat vision,” Salil Gupte, president of Boeing India, said in an X post.
At present, Indian airlines and defence forces operate over 280 Boeing civil and military aircraft. The US planemaker has over 600 aircraft on order from Indian airlines, including the Boeing 737 Max, 787s and 777X.
Growing footprint
Boeing is also looking to grow its footprint on the defence side and increase sourcing from India. Annually, the company sources $1.25 billion in parts and components from India and has invested $200 million in a campus in Bengaluru, which is its largest overseas investment.
Ortberg’s visit to India comes as the planemaker tries to recover from its worst crisis, which resulted from falling sales, increased regulatory scrutiny, and employee unrest. Last year, it delivered 348 commercial aircraft, one-third lower than in 2023. In contrast, rival Airbus reported 766 aircraft deliveries in 2024.
Two weeks ago, Boeing was among 45 US companies penalised by China for arms exports to Taiwan, a sign of escalating trade tensions between Beijing and Washington. Boeing is the largest customer in China’s aviation manufacturing industry, with more than 10,000 Boeing airplanes flying with China-made parts.
