EV market in India could double up in two years: Hyundai – Car News

Hyundai will offer a one-stop shop for everything in the EV segment — from product and brand to reliability, network, and charging infrastructure, says Tarun Garg, COO Hyundai India.

The best-selling mid-size SUV, the Hyundai Creta, is ready to go green! Its electric version will make its world debut on January 17 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. We caught up with Hyundai’s Chief Operating Officer, Tarun Garg, who’s confident that after selling over 1.1 million Cretas – and a whopping 190,000 units last year – the electric version is all set to be a “charge” above the rest.

How is Hyundai Creta Electric different from the competition?

The Creta Electric is entering a crowded EV SUV market, already filled with contenders like the Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra BE 6, MG ZS EV, and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara. But Hyundai’s Tarun Garg is confident that both the Hyundai and Creta brands have the upper hand, thanks to their reputation for reliability, performance, and comfort.

The Creta Electric comes with two battery options — a 42 kWh and a 51.4 kWh. The 42 kWh version delivers 133 bhp and a range of 390 km, while the 51.4 kWh variant offers 169 bhp and a range of 473 km. The 11 kW AC charger takes the 42 kWh battery from 10–100 per cent in 4 hours, while the 51.4 kWh version takes 4 hours and 50 minutes. With the 50 kW DC charger, you can juice up the Creta Electric from 10–80 per cent in 58 minutes.

Hyundai offers a complete EV solution

Hyundai has introduced a charging management system through an app, giving customers access to over 10,000 charging points nationwide. The app supports payments at 7,500 charging stations, while 1,150 stations also accept Hyundai’s in-car payment system.

To support the Creta Electric, Hyundai has set up 410 service workshops across the country, equipped to handle all servicing needs. Additionally, 550 showrooms are getting ready to sell the Creta Electric, ensuring widespread availability.

Make-in-India battery technology

The Creta Electric comes with locally sourced battery packs, though the cells are still imported. Garg spilled the beans on Hyundai’s future plans, saying, “We’re working on a tie-up with a local Indian battery partner who also manufactures cells. We’re also focusing on power electronics and drivetrains.” He added, “Last year, we sold close to 190,000 Creta units. We believe that electric penetration in India will double in 2025 and 2026, and we expect the Creta to lead that charge.”

But before you get too excited, here’s the not-so-great news. Garg confirmed that, at the moment, Hyundai has no plans for a Creta Electric N Line.
