OSD (Sports), Youth Resources & Sports, Nagaland and former international football player Roko Angami today said that there are no shortcuts in sports and there can be no backdoor appointment in sports. Roko said this while gracing the football event of the ongoing 50th Games & Sports Meet 2025 of Mima Youth Organization (MYO) at Mima village in Kohima district.

Sports need total concentration and dedication, he said while adding, if you do not work hard you cannot outplay your peers. He called upon the sportspersons to maintain regular practice for to attain perfection. Even if we keep on talking about discipline, if we do not change ourselves there will be no progress, he said. Roko also said that players have to pay a lot of attention to their food habits. The wellbeing of society largely depends on the youth, he said. We focus too much on having good times but overlook the prospect of improving our games, he said and stressed on the need to “discipline ourselves.” Very soon, Nagaland Super League will start and players for the league have already started earning, he said. The league is scheduled to start from January 28.

The time for our athletes to earn their living through sports has also began in Nagaland too, he said. “Back in those days our parents discouraged our youths from becoming athletes fearing injury. However, now youths are wanting to play sports because of its prospects and earning potential,” he said. He said that times have changed and the competitive level has risen. Sports is played with positive mind and if you want your mind to be healthy, you have to take care of your body, he said.

Athletes are now directing their attention to staying healthy with proper exercise and balanced diet, he said. Let us pay more attention to staying healthy and not just on eating and gluttony, he added. 

Roko also informed the Department of Youth Resources & Sports will be conducting selection trials for induction into Indira Gandhi Academy Kohima and State Sports Hostel, Dimapur for Archery, Boxing, Wrestling, Taekwondo, Football and Sepaktakraw under 14 years category for the academic session 2025.

The selection trials will take place on January 21 at Indira Gandhi Stadium Kohima and at State Sports Hostel, Dimapur on January 22.
Interested candidates who have asked to join the same with the required documents. Candidate must produce Aadhar card, birth certificate, marksheet of last 2 academic year and latest passport size photo with entry fee of Rs. 50 on the selection day.

Later, Roko along with MYO officials inspected the ongoing construction of the new playground of Mima village.

Meanwhile, Peteneilhou Tepa, OSD to Minister Power & Parliamentary Affairs Nagaland will grace volleyball event on January 16. Naga wrestling event will take place on January 17 with MLA Kevipodi Sophie as the guest of honour.

The closing ceremony will take place on the same day.
