Weather Update: Dense fog engulfs Delhi-NCR, visibility drops to zero in many places
Dense fog shrouded Delhi and its neighboring regions on Wednesday morning, bringing visibility to near zero in several areas and causing significant disruptions to rail and air transport. The chilling weather conditions are part of an ongoing cold wave gripping northern India.
At 5:30 a.m., the temperature in Delhi was recorded at 10°C, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a further drop to 9°C by the day’s minimum. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 19°C, accompanied by a generally overcast sky. Light rain or drizzle is likely to occur later in the evening or night, according to the IMD.
The dense fog hampered flight operations at Delhi Airport, leading to delays for flights not equipped with CAT III Instrument Landing Systems. Airport authorities issued repeated advisories urging passengers to confirm flight statuses with their respective airlines. “Both take-offs and landings are operational, but fog may disrupt non-CAT III flights. We regret the inconvenience caused,” stated the Delhi Airport in notifications.
Rail transport was similarly affected, with at least 26 trains running behind schedule due to poor visibility. Indian Railways confirmed delays on several routes leading to Delhi and neighboring states.
The IMD had forecast dense fog for the morning, with further warnings of evening and nighttime fog. Light precipitation is expected to provide some relief, but the thick fog and cold wave continue to pose challenges for commuters and transport services.
Residents are being advised to take precautions while traveling in the fog, such as using fog lights and driving cautiously. The persistent cold wave, coupled with dense fog, is expected to continue disrupting daily life in northern India over the coming days.
