Developing | China accuses Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger parent of ‘inappropriate conduct’ on Xinjiang

China’s Ministry of Commerce (Mofcom) said on Thursday that PVH Group, the parent company of clothing brands Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, is involved with “inappropriate conducts” concerning Xinjiang matters, citing initial investigation results.

The ministry’s office overseeing the Unreliable Entity List (UEL) mechanism – a blacklist similar to the US entity list – will hold a regulatory talk to the US firm in the short term, according to an online statement.

“China has consistently handled issues related to the Unreliable Entity List with caution, targeting only a very limited number of foreign entities that threaten national security,” the ministry said, adding that “law-abiding foreign entities need not worry”.

The UEL office plans to hold further discussions with PVH in the near future, and results will be released to public, it added.

Earlier this week, the US Department of Homeland Security announced a ban on imports from 37 Chinese companies over alleged human-rights abuses involving Xinjiang’s Uygurs.
