USAID provides critical medical equipment and oxygen supply commodities to Port Moresby General Hospital
The U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) handed over critical oxygen supply commodities and medical equipment to Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) in a ceremony Wednesday morning.
The equipment and commodities include laryngoscopes, thermal imaging cameras, pulse oximeters, oxygen concentrators, and other items. The commodities will make possible the management and treatment of medical conditions requiring oxygen therapy, including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
USAID Country Representative Nino Nadiradze said that today’s donation is a continuation of longstanding United States support for health systems strengthening, improved healthcare outcomes, and increased access to quality medical services in PNG, “USAID’s health systems support has been a cornerstone of the United States’ fifty-year partnership with Papua New Guinea. We are proud to support PNG’s doctors with equipment, supplies and knowledge that will help them save lives and provide the best possible care.”
Dr. Henao Asa, Acting Director Medical Services, PMGH, highlighted the impact of these commodities, stating, “This support from USAID will significantly enhance our capacity to deliver critical care to patients in need. It is a crucial step toward improving healthcare outcomes not only in Port Moresby, but in PNG as a whole.”
Dr. Asa discusses the impact USAID’s partnership has had on medical care at PMGH.
The equipment and supplies were donated under USAID’s Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project, which is implemented by FHI 360. This initiative grew out of USAID’s commitment to strengthening global and national health supply chains. By optimizing the logistics of procuring and distributing oxygen commodities, the project aims to enhance access to lifesaving healthcare resources in PNG.
“FHI 360 is proud to contribute to enhancing healthcare delivery in-country. Through our role in managing the logistics and distribution of these vital oxygen supply commodities, we are helping to ensure that lifesaving resources reach the facilities and patients who need them most,” says Dr. Poruan Temu, FHI 360 PNG Country Representative.
