Cameron Diaz’s Comeback Movie Back in Action Debuts With Unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes Score

Cameron Diaz is one of the most popular comedy and drama actors, and her films grossed billions at the box office. However, the actress stepped out of the spotlight to focus on her family for a decade and her comeback movie is not the success she’d hoped.

Netflix’s Back in Action, where she stars with Jamie Foxx, is Diaz’s first film in 10 years. The movie premiered on the platform on Jan. 17, and its debut score has just been unveiled. Out of 23 reviews, Back in Action has an abysmal 26% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which might fluctuate as more reviews come in. The audience score is currently not available, as there are fewer than 50 ratings at the time of publishing.

Cameron Diaz’s First Movie in 10 Years Gets an Explosive New Trailer

Cameron Diaz steps out of retirement for her new action movie with Jamie Foxx.

Most of the reviews praise Diaz and Foxx’s chemistry, but Casey’s Movie Mania highlights that it’s not enough to save the movie. Diaz maintains her “likeable, yet magnetic charm” she’s known for, and the review highlights that it was “fun watching Diaz and Foxx playing off against each other,” yet “Back in Action misses the opportunity to stand out above the rest of made-for-Netflix’s espionage-themed action movies these days.”

The Wrap’s William Bibbiani further praises Diaz’s efforts but notes Back in Action is “not interesting or ambitious enough to be bad.” The Daily Beasts’ Nick Shager notes the action film “boasts not a single original, amusing, or exciting moment.”

In one of the positive reviews, Elements of Madness’ Douglas Davidson argues that Back in Action is “comfortingly, dependably predictable, even with a few clever twists and turns, and, frankly, that’s exactly what’s needed right now,” highlighting that it has “just enough pathos to make the internal conflicts mean something when the external stakes rise.”

The movie was not a huge commercial success but it’s turning into a hit on streaming.

CBR’s own Sayantan Gayen highlights that Back in Action is “fun and worth it,” especially for Diaz’s comeback after 10 years. The review highlights the action film has “family-friendly humor, and a touch of sentimentality to make it perfect for a casual weekend watch.” However, it also points out that it’s not the time of film that audiences will want to rewatch.

Cameron Diaz’s New Film Continues an Unfortunate Two-Decade Trend

Cameron Diaz is best known for roles in 1997’s My Best Friend’s Wedding, 1998’s There’s Something About Mary, and 2006’s The Holiday. The rom-com/ action star has delighted viewers in over 50 projects and is also the voice of Princess Fiona in the Shrek franchise. However, Back in Action, her return movie continues an unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes trend.

The “rotten” score of her latest film continues a long line of “rotten” scores on the review-aggregator website. One that has been going on for two decades. The last film she starred in with a positive Rotten Tomatoes score from the critics is 2005’s In Her Shoes, which received a “Certified Fresh” badge thanks to its 74% approval score and 66% from the audience. Since then, none of her films have impressed the critics.

Of course, the same can’t be said about the audience. The next film after In Her Shoes was The Holiday, which holds an 80% approval score from the audience (but only 51% from the critics). The film has become a major cult classic, and fans rewatch it around Christmastime. Other titles like 2007’s Shrek the Halls and 2009’s My Sister’s Keeper have received positive reviews.

Back in Action is streaming on Netflix.
