‘India’s automotive industry both fantastic and future-ready’: Key takeaways from PM Modi’s address at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described India as a prime destination for investors seeking opportunities in the mobility sector, pledging full government support to those looking to shape the future of the industry.

Speaking after inaugurating Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, PM Modi highlighted country’s focus on advancing green technology, electric vehicles (EVs), hydrogen fuel, and biofuels. ‘Make in India’ initiative has played a huge role in the development of auto industry, he added.

The five-day expo, running from January 17-22, spans three venues: Bharat Mandapam, Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, and the India Expo Center and Mart in Greater Noida. It brings together the entire mobility ecosystem under one roof, including automobile manufacturers, component suppliers, electronics firms, tyre makers, energy storage companies, automotive software developers, and material recyclers.

Here are key takeaways from PM Modi’s speech at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025:

1.‘Neo-middle class’ driving vehicle demand: PM Modi stated that around 25 crore people have moved out of poverty in India, contributing to the rise of a new “neo-middle class” with a growing purchasing power.

2. Improved infrastructure boosting automotive sector: PM Modi highlighted that inadequate road infrastructure had traditionally restricted car sales in the nation. However, with continuous improvements in roadways and transport infrastructure, the situation has changed dramatically. He also pointed out that over Rs 11 lakh crore was allocated for infrastructure in the last budget, supporting the construction of multi-lane national highways across the country, which is ensuring smoother travel and driving up vehicle sales.

3. Growth of automotive industry: Praising the remarkable growth of the automotive industry, PM Modi pointed out that the sector had witnessed a 12 per cent annual growth in the past year. He also mentioned that exports from India’s automotive sector had increased.

4. Remembering Ratan Tata and Osamu Suzuki: The Prime Minister acknowledged the significant contributions of industry pioneers such as Ratan Tata and Osamu Suzuki, crediting them for their role in shaping India’s auto sector and fulfilling the aspirations of the middle class.

4. Promotion of Green Mobility and alternative fuels: PM Modi stressed the importance of sustainable mobility solutions in addressing global warming challenges. He called for continued efforts to promote solar energy and alternative fuels, reinforcing India’s commitment to a green future. During India’s G20 presidency, the government placed a strong emphasis on green mobility, and Modi encouraged more investments in electric vehicles (EVs) and battery storage. He also invited the youth to explore start-ups in the green mobility sector, highlighting the immense potential for innovation and growth in this field.

5. Centre’s initiative to support electric mobility: PM Modi mentioned central government’s proactive approach in promoting electric mobility, pointing to the successful launch of the frame-2 scheme five years ago. He shared that over Rs 8,000 crore has been provided in subsidies to support the adoption of electric vehicles. Additionally, the development of EV charging infrastructure has facilitated the deployment of over 16 lakh electric vehicles across India, with more than 5,000 electric buses currently in operation.

6. Rise in vehicle demand and India’s global position: PM Modi said India’s automotive market is witnessing a surge in demand, with around 2.5 crore cars sold annually. India is now the third-largest passenger vehicle market globally, a reflection of the country’s expanding middle class and improved infrastructure. He reiterated that the government’s focus on enhancing ease of travel is playing a significant role in the growth of the automotive sector.
