India-West Staff Reporter
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – On World Hindi Day, January 10, the International Hindi Association (IHA) – Indiana hosted a webinar titled “The Economics of Hindi in a Global Perspective.” The event featured a thought-provoking presentation by Prof. Mithilesh Mishra from Darbhanga, Bihar, and was convened by Dr. Rakesh Kumar, former President of IHA-Indiana.
The program began with opening remarks by Somnath Ghosh, Consul General of India in Chicago, who highlighted the cultural significance of Hindi and its role in shaping the identity of the Indian diaspora. Ghosh emphasized the importance of promoting Hindi internationally, drawing comparisons with other global languages like Mandarin, French, and Spanish.
Delivering his presentation in Hindi with English slides, Prof. Mishra delved into the economic advantages of bilingualism, particularly as India rises to become the world’s fifth-largest economy. While English remains dominant globally, Mishra spotlighted the untapped potential of Hindi, especially in India’s Hindi-speaking regions, which contribute approximately 47% of the nation’s GDP.
Prof. Mishra shared compelling research findings, revealing that 75% of consumers prefer advertisements and product information in their native language. This makes Hindi a powerful medium for business promotion, both within India and among the Indian diaspora. He also noted that Hindi currently ranks 10th on the Power Language Index, with opportunities to climb higher through sustained efforts.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar moderated a brief but engaging Q&A session, addressing audience queries and expressing gratitude to Prof. Mishra for his valuable insights. The webinar, streamed live on YouTube and Facebook, attracted nearly 700 views and received overwhelmingly positive feedback.
The event underscored the importance of Hindi as not just a cultural asset but also a significant economic tool, reinforcing its relevance in today’s globalized world.
