Naval assets show India’s indigenous manufacturing progress

Following the news on simultaneous commissioning of three indigenously built naval assets by the Indian Navy, Rithik Rao, Aerospace & Defense Analyst at GlobalData, a data and analytics company, offers his view:

“The commissioning of INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vagsheer marks a significant milestone in India’s shipbuilding and design capabilities, highlighting the country’s steadfast commitment to achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Armed with advanced weaponry such as BrahMos and Barak-8 missiles, both INS Surat and INS Nilgiri provide the Indian Navy with enhanced anti-surface and anti-air warfare capabilities, excelling in both offensive and defensive roles.

“INS Vagsheer, being the last of the current batch of Kalvari-class diesel-electric submarines, excels in a range of operations, including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and area surveillance. Together, these domestically built platforms demonstrate India’s growing competence in developing cutting-edge naval technologies, thereby strengthening its maritime security and reinforcing its strategic autonomy in defence production.

“The increasing maritime presence of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLA Navy) in the Indian Ocean Region has underscored the need for India to bolster its naval capacity. The country is trying to catch up with its Chinese counterparts in terms of quantity and technology advancements. Consequently, the Indian Navy has been placing greater emphasis on improved capabilities of its new inductees with state-of-the-art sensors and weapon systems, aligning with a broader operational and force-level strategy. This also enables India to fulfil its responsibility towards maritime security & stability in the region.

“According to GlobaData’s report India Defense Market Size, Trends, Budget Allocation, Regulations, Acquisitions, Competitive Landscape and Forecast to 2029, India is forecast to spend $35.2 billion on the procurement of various types of indigenously built naval vessels and submarines. This substantial investment reflects the country’s ambition to cultivate a robust and resilient defence industrial base.

“Shipbuilders such as Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) stand to benefit significantly, leveraging the expertise gained from constructing complex naval platforms. Such advancements will lay a strong foundation for future collaborations between major domestic defence contractors and many small and medium suppliers in upcoming next-generation submarine and naval vessel construction programs, ensuring the Indian Navy remains well-equipped to meet evolving challenges in the upcoming decades.”
