Videographer calls for more female music video directors
A rising female music video director and videographer, Onyia Chidinma, aka Niyas Lenz, has called for more women to take on directorial roles in the music industry.
In an interview with Sunday Scoop, she stated, “Yes, we need more female directors in the industry. Women tend to be more detail-oriented and can approach visuals, emotions and storytelling differently. Their creative inputs can lead to groundbreaking results. The stereotypes need to be broken. The industry isn’t just for men. I believe that if women are given a chance, their creativity and versatility will combine to create endless narratives, promoting empowerment. Take director Pink, for instance; she is thriving in a male-dominated world and is now highly sought after.”
On the common mistakes artistes make when creating music videos, Chidinma said, “Shooting a music video without a strong, clear vision can result in scenes that don’t align with the song, leading to a disjointed production. It’s vital to have a storyline that communicates the song’s message effectively. Additionally, poor budgeting—like overspending on locations and props while skimping on important elements like quality filming equipment, editing, and a skilled crew—can negatively affect the video’s overall quality.”
