Islamabad: With the departure of Sheikh Hasina and Mohammad Yunus assuming leadership in Bangladesh, Pakistan sees a major opportunity to strengthen ties with its eastern neighbour. Experts believe that Pakistan’s growing friendship with Bangladesh aims to counter New Delhi’s influence, especially in the strategically important Bay of Bengal, where Islamabad seeks to increase its presence.

Bangladeshi Naval Delegation Visits Karachi

In order to enhance bilateral relations, Pak Navy recently invited a Bangladesh’s naval delegation to Karachi, where its naval headquarters is located. Lieutenant General S.M. Kamrul Hasan, Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division in Bangladesh, met senior Pakistani naval officials and discussed regional security and bilateral defence cooperation.

Strengthening Pakistan-Bangladesh Ties

General Hasan held meetings with Rear Admiral Abdul Munib, Commander of the Pakistani Fleet, Rear Admiral Faisal Amin, Commander of the Coast, and Rear Admiral Salman Ilyas, Managing Director of Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works. As per the official statement from the Directorate of Public Relations (Pakistan Navy), the discussions focused on strengthening professional ties and addressing mutual interests.

Inspection of Pakistani Naval Assets

During his visit, General Hasan also reviewed Pakistani naval ships and units. Discussions focused on boosting regional maritime security and exploring potential areas of collaboration that include joint military exercises, bilateral visits, and training exchange programs.

This visit is seen as an important step toward deepening defence ties between both nations.

Yunus Adopts an Anti-India Stance

Bangladesh’s leader, Mohammad Yunus, has taken a clear anti-India position, fostering relationships with countries that are not friendly towards India. Since assuming office, Yunus has held meetings with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on two occasions and has accepted an invitation to travel to Pakistan. At the same time, tensions have been rising along the border between India and Bangladesh.
