Each year, student-athletes, coaches, and staff of the team that wins the CFP National Championship receive a national championship ring. The practice dates back to 1872 when Princeton University got the privilege of earning the first brand-new ring after a spectacular win, and the rest is a perpetual history. Eventually, it became a key appeal point for the players, making them more eager to win it all. However, over the years, the formation and cost of the trophy climbed down a long yet exciting path.

The strategic evaluation includes a downward trajectory in the standard of the jewelry used. They started to grace the ring with cheaper stones than before. Also, in terms of the structure, rings were much more generic and flat before, leaving less room for creative leeway. But as time progressed, the ring became the symbol of distinction for athletes, coaches, and staff. The design was standardized in 2014 during the first CFP National Championship. However, 2025 is special. The newly unveiled first look of this year’s ring hinted at a total dreamy revival of the lost glory of the club’s culture.

This year, ESPN and the CFB playoff committee joined hands to come up with a unique, expensive, giant ring containing all the minute details of the game.12 distinguished stones denote the top 12 teams, the first time of its kind. One diamond marks the championship team, and the fillers represent the crowd. So, how many dollars do the higher-ups need to put online for the ring?

Current Cost Regulations for College Football Championship Rings

The NCAA caps the production cost of each ring at $415 for affordability. Well, there is a reason behind this. NCAA allowed this much money because the figure is the highest benchmark for the schools to invest in their student athletes’ well-being. In the NFL, the situation is different, and so does the cost. There are no hard and fast rules in the NFL Super Bowl league, but in CFB, they must adjust to the price, so the quality and metal of the jewelry differs accordingly.

The face of the ring features the words “National Champions” and the CFP logo in gold. Universities can experiment as much as they want, covering the sides with game results and coach details, the first letter of the coaches’ name, or anything of that sort. Jostens collaborated with schools to give it a unique pop touch.

However, let’s not just pass over the main show-stopper, the iconic coaches’ trophy.

Intrinsic Value of the National Championship Trophy

The coaches’ trophy, the highly sought-after prize after a taxing season, does full justice to the hype surrounding it. It weighs around 35 pounds, including 1 pound of 24-karat gold. It was initially reported valued at $14,400 based on its gold content in 2015. The estimated current value somewhere stands near  $22,000 (based on gold prices)

Well, no matter how lucrative it sounds, the trophies are strictly not for sale. None of the trophies have been auctioned so far. But the value of the prize stretches beyond price. Since 2015, the teams that won the trophy include Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, and LSU.

Let’s brace up for the biggest college football showdown in a while!
