BISP termed revolutionary initiative to alleviate poverty

FAISALABAD: Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Chairman Senator Rubina Khalid Monday said the BISP is a revolutionary and progressive initiative to alleviate poverty by creating maximum job opportunities through skill enhancement of poor segments of society.

In a meeting with FCCI president Rehan Naseem Bharara, Rubina said the BISP has focused on the promotion of skills among the marginalised sectors instead of promoting beggary and spoon-feeding. She said currently different organisations are involved in imparting skills training in diverse sectors and BISP was also trying to bridge the wide gap between the job seekers and job providers by providing skills in the relevant fields.

Rubina assured that the real stakeholders would be consulted to make the women training centre functional in Faisalabad Garments City. She said regular follow up meetings would be arranged to remove any bottleneck in this connection. Bharara said this meeting was a follow up of the previous visit of Rubina to the FCCI, saying the BISP would not only provide jobs to the needy segments of society but also provide trained manpower to the industrial sector. FCCI Senior Vice President Qaisar Shams Gucha and MNA Syed Ali Qasim Gilani were also present on the occasion.

COMMISSIONER REVIEWS STEPS TO MAKE 8 BAZAARS OF GHANTA GHAR VEHICLE-FREE: Commissioner Maryam Khan Monday reviewed the steps being taken to make the eight bazaars surrounding Ghanta Ghar vehicle-free by walking and riding an electric cart.

She directed the authorities concerned that no official vehicles would be allowed inside the bazaars, and officers should conduct visits either on foot or using electric carts. The commissioner instructed that uniform signboards should be installed outside all shops in the eight bazaars. She also received a briefing on the project to shift electricity cables underground.

Maryam Khan emphasised making the bazaars completely encroachment-free and more pedestrian-friendly. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nadeem Nasir, Chief Officer Municipal Corporation Syed Ali Abbas Bukhari, Deputy Chief Officer Azmat Firdous, and CTO Farhan Aslam, along with other officials, accompanied her.

FINES IMPOSED ON 38 FOOD OUTLETS: The Punjab Food Authority imposed Rs 370,000 fine on 38 food outlets and milk suppliers during inspection drives on Monday. The PFA authorities sealed one unit, and one sample was sent to the laboratory for further testing. The authority discarded 70 litre milk, 70kg confectionery items and three maunds of expired prohibited goods. During roadblock inspections, 91 vehicles carrying over 43,000 litre milk were checked. Minor issues resulted in 114 outlets being served improvement notices.
