Singara Chennai Travel card of MTC draws good response
The mobility travel card launched by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has received a good response, with nearly 12,500 cards having been sold.
The MTC, in pursuit of digital ticketing transactions, introduced the Singara Chennai Travel Card for cashless purchase of tickets in public transport facilities such as bus and metro systems. It, however, cannot be used to purchase tickets for suburban trains.
The card, envisioned under the national common mobility card system, was launched by Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar at the Secretariat here on January 6 this year.
MTC Managing Director Alby John Varghese said 3,900 buses had been equipped with electronic ticketing machines to replace the printed tickets last year. This resulted in the travel card, which could be used for travelling in buses and metro trains, becoming a hit.
Mr. Varghese said any value could be stored in the card, and it worked in offline mode. The ticket fare would be deducted when it was swiped. The card was used in over 60% of the MTC’s fleet.
As part of the first phase of the project, the target was to issue 50,000 cards for free by the State bank of India. They were to be made available at bus stations, including Koyambedu, Broadway, Central Railway Station, Tambaram, Poonamallee, Thiruvanmiyur, Red Hills, Velachery, Guindy, Avadi, T. Nagar, Ambattur, Ambattur OT, and Adyar.
