Star Wars’ Latest Lead May Be Ryan Gosling In Mystery Film

Disney, busy making super expensive Disney Plus Star Wars series of varying success levels, has not made a new film since 2019’s Rise of Skywalker. The first one of a new era will be The Mandalorian And Grogu, based on the show, but there are plans for future movies, despite a lot of cancellations so far.
One of those films is an upcoming one from director Shawn Levy, which has already had a year’s worth of script work and two years of total development. Details are unclear though it’s said to be disconnected from the main Skywalker era. Now, we have our first real development with a THR report that Ryan Gosling may be about to be pulled to star in the film. From the report:
“Sources say the Gosling development is a late-in-the-game move for Levy’s movie schedule. The filmmaker was eyeing to direct a boy band movie set up at Paramount, which would have reunited him with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. But Gosling’s interest and involvement suddenly shifted the Star Wars project into hyperspace. If a deal makes, the project would continue to fly like the Millennium Falcon, becoming not only Levy’s next movie but also the next Star Wars movie to go into production, with cameras potentially rolling this fall.”
Okay too many clumsy Star Wars references there, but one thing the report also correctly notes is that this would be a rare development where Star Wars recruits a top A-list actor to star in a film. The original films made stars out of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, so sure, they were big names when they came back for the original trilogy. Of the new group, Oscar Isaac was the most known. Pedro Pascal is now a huge star, but The Mandalorian helped him get there, and though of course he was rarely seen. Rosario Dawson is Ahsoka. Jude Law was just in Skeleton Crew. But yes, I think you could argue that given his current career trajectory with starring roles in Blade Runner 2049, La La Land and Barbie, Gosling would be the biggest star to board Star Wars possibly ever.

There is no word on what his role would be. We don’t even know if this is a Jedi/Sith feature, but offhand, it feels like Gosling would be better off a Han-style smuggler type than a Jedi. I would, however, actually love to see what he could do in a villain role. But if he’s supposed to be the lead, that seems unlikely.
I would be less concerned about Gosling joining as an almost too-big A-lister, and more about Shawn Levy doing this movie. His star has greatly risen after Deadpool and Wolverine, but I’m not wild about his past work, The Adam Project, Free Guy, The Night at the Museum movies. I did like Real Steel. But yes, he’s almost entirely worked on comedies. Maybe that’s what this movie is, who knows, though he seems like at least a bit of an odd choice for Star Wars. We’ll see how it goes, and if this Gosling news is going to be official soon.
