Shasta Lake hosts Export Expo to boost local businesses’ global reach

SHASTA LAKE, Calif. — The Shasta Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is encouraging local businesses to tap into the lucrative world of overseas trade. At the “Export Expo” held in the city of Shasta Lake, the EDC brought together local businesses, service providers, and international trade experts to explore opportunities in global markets.

Jennifer Verdon, an international trade specialist from the U.S. Commercial Service, traveled from Boise, Idaho, to speak at the event. Verdon advised attendees, “Don’t be intimidated, just do your homework.”

“There are some industries that are really straightforward and easy, there’s not that many rules and regulations. But it always depends on the country that you are exporting to,” Verdon said. “There are other industries where there are a lot of regulations and you have to be very aware of what you can and can’t do… Market research is really important for you to know and understand what you need to be compliant with.”

This marks the first time the EDC has offered a presentation focused on exporting. Rebecca Baer, President and CEO of the EDC, emphasized the benefits of looking beyond local markets. Baer said that local businesses don’t necessarily need to think about just the local market.

“Really the EDC is interested in providing all the tools and resources to local businesses to help them grow and one of the really great ways to grow is exporting,” Baer said. “Not only does the company grow when businesses export but our local economy also grows when businesses here export.”
